How the frequencies work

The binaural beat is the difference between the two ears. With a 250 Hz carrier and a 6 Hz beat, the left channel plays 250 Hz and the right plays 256 Hz. The carrier changes the audible pitch; the beat setting changes the difference. Stereo headphones keep these channels separate, and changing the background noise does not change either tone.

Theta Preparation starts with a steady 6 Hz beat and a 250 Hz carrier. A 2017 EEG study by Jirakittayakorn and Wongsawat investigated that frequency combination and reported changes in theta activity. It studied waking listeners, so this preset is presented as preparation for a dream practice rather than a verified lucid-dream induction protocol.

The two Experimental Gamma journeys use the original open-source 60- and 85-minute sequences: 10 Hz, a transition to 6 Hz, a steady 6 Hz stage, a transition to 4.5 Hz, and finally a gradual transition to 40 Hz. Their stages run on a timer; they do not identify your sleep stage. The 2014 study often associated with 25 and 40 Hz lucid-dream research used electrical stimulation during REM sleep, not binaural audio. A later sleep-laboratory study also questions a simple link between frontal 40 Hz activity and lucid dreaming. These audio journeys therefore remain experimental.

Choose and adjust your session

Simple mode, labelled Default in the generator, gives you ready-made journeys, a duration setting and a background mix, so you can start without entering frequencies or editing individual stages. Advanced adds carrier pitch, tone level, fade length and a step editor. Each question-mark button opens a short explanation without permanently expanding the form.

Duration scales all steps proportionally while keeping their frequency endpoints. Background selects pure tones or pink, brown or white noise; Background level controls that layer. Carrier sets the left-ear pitch, Tone level controls the stereo tones, and Fade softens the start and finish. The step editor uses one line per stage: seconds, start beat, end beat. For example, 600, 6, 4 gradually changes the beat from 6 to 4 Hz over ten minutes before any duration scaling.

Save preset stores your settings in this browser and Load saved restores them. After creating a sound, use the audio controls to pause or resume, or open ZE Retro Player for skins, the equalizer and visualizations. Full screen expands the entire generator; press the same button or Escape to return.

Open-source foundation

The journey timings are adapted from Kayvan Sylvan’s Binaural Generator, released under the MIT license. MIT here names the software license; it does not indicate university authorship or endorsement. The ZE version generates stereo audio in your browser and uses continuous phase for smooth frequency transitions.

Frequently asked questions

Is the lucid dream sound generator free, and do I need an account?

It is free to use, with no registration or email address required. You can create a session, listen, adjust your settings and download the full WAV directly from this page. There is no sign-up step before playback or downloading.

Which settings should I choose for my first session?

Start in Simple mode (Default) with Theta Preparation · 6 Hz, choose a duration that suits your practice and keep the volume comfortable. Use Dream intention to select a starting profile, then check the journey, duration and background before pressing Create sound. The intention menu loads settings; it does not determine what you will dream about.

Do I need headphones, and what does 6 Hz actually mean?

Use stereo headphones so each ear receives its own tone. A 6 Hz binaural setting means a 6 Hz difference between the channels: for example, 250 Hz in the left ear and 256 Hz in the right. It does not mean your headphones play a standalone 6 Hz tone. Keep mono audio disabled; speakers mix the channels in the room instead of keeping them separate.

What is the difference between the sound journeys and noise backgrounds?

Sound journey controls the beat sequence over time; Background adds a separate sound layer. Theta Preparation holds a steady 6 Hz difference, while the experimental journeys move through several stages. Choose pure tones for no noise layer, or pink, brown or white noise according to the texture you prefer. Background level changes the noise mix without changing the selected tone frequencies.

Does the sound start immediately, and how do I pause it?

Create sound starts a live session immediately; you do not need to wait for a full audio file to render. The player shows elapsed and total time, with Pause while playing and Play after pausing. Stop ends the session. If you change the journey settings, press Create sound again to begin a new session with those settings.

How do I name and download my complete session?

Enter a title in Session name, press Create sound, then choose Download full session (WAV). The export prepares the entire configured duration, including its frequency transitions and background mix, rather than only the part you have already heard. Keep the page open while preparation runs; longer sessions take more processing time and produce larger files. The WAV can be played later without keeping this page open.

What is saved when I use Save preset?

Save preset stores your generator settings in this browser, not an audio recording or an online account. Use Load saved on the same browser to restore them. Browser storage is separate from a downloaded WAV and may be removed when you clear site data, so download the audio if you want a file to keep. The generator creates and exports sound on your device rather than uploading your recording to the website.

Can I use my phone or listen with the screen locked?

You can operate the generator using its on-screen controls on a phone. Live playback with a locked screen or a background tab depends on your browser and device, which may suspend the page. For a session you want to play independently of the generator, download the WAV and open it in your usual audio app.

How do I control the visualizations and equalizer?

Open ZE Retro Player from the session player. On desktop, H advances to the next visualization and Backspace returns to the previous one; H leaves the controls hidden in fullscreen. On mobile, swipe left for the next visualization or right for the previous one. Tap the visualization to reveal the controls, and use EQ to show or hide the equalizer. These visual controls share the same playing session.

Do I need to watch the visualizations for the sound to work?

No. Visualizations are an optional companion to playback. You can listen through the standard player with your eyes closed, or use the retro interface while preparing your session. Opening the retro player changes the interface without restarting the sound journey.
